When our clients first bought their home, the front garden and driveway were incredibly bare. For years, the space had been dominated by overgrown conifers that cast heavy shade, making it nearly impossible for anything to grow underneath. The front yard, which should have been an inviting introduction to the home, instead felt dark and unwelcoming. The overgrown trees overshadowed the driveway and created a sense of neglect. With a little vision, however, the garden has been completely transformed into a vibrant, layered space that strikes a perfect balance between relaxed beauty and structured elegance.

Clearing the Path: Removing the Overgrown Conifers

The first step in this remodel was removing the problematic conifers. These trees, which had been left to grow unchecked, were simply too large for their location. They not only blocked sunlight but also created a dense, messy undergrowth that was difficult to maintain. By taking them out, they were able to open up the space and allow light to flood back into the garden. This also provided the perfect opportunity to rethink the planting and layout from scratch. With a fresh, blank canvas to work with, the transformation could truly begin.

Colourful, Relaxed Planting: Balancing Formal and Informal

Our clients wanted a garden that felt colourful and relaxed, without veering into wild, unruly territory or being too formal. They craved a space that felt welcoming, with enough variety to keep things interesting, but with an overall sense of order. To achieve this, we focused on creating planting themes that would run through all of the garden beds, unifying the space while allowing for an exciting mix of plants.

The planting scheme incorporates an array of colours, from soft pastels to vibrant hues. We used a mix of perennials and shrubs that would provide year-round interest. To keep things cohesive, we selected plants with complementary tones that worked well together in each bed. Palms, which were high on the client’s wishlist, were a natural choice for adding a tropical vibe to the front garden. Their bold fronds bring both height and texture, creating a striking contrast against the more delicate plants and soft foliage.

Adding Layers and Textures

One of the key goals of the remodel was to add layers and textures to the garden. To do this, we introduced a range of plants with different heights, shapes, and leaf structures. By incorporating plants like fatsia japonica for its large, glossy leaves and hostas for their lush, green foliage, we were able to create a sense of depth and dimension.

Introducing Structure and Elegance

While the planting was meant to feel relaxed and colourful, we also wanted to introduce some structure to the garden. This was achieved through carefully chosen topiary and shrubs. Taxus balls and cones, strategically placed throughout the garden, provided a sense of formality without feeling rigid. These evergreen shapes brought a sophisticated, sculptural quality to the space.

Additionally, we added Ligustrum jonandrum which was shaped into small, elegant “lollipops.” These vertical forms created a sense of rhythm and order within the garden, acting as punctuation marks that enhanced the visual flow of the design. The lollipops, along with the Taxus shapes, offered a delightful contrast to the softer, more natural elements of the planting, giving the garden structure without being overly formal.

A Garden That Reflects Personality and Style

Now, the garden feels like a true reflection of our clients’ personalities—colourful, inviting, and filled with character, yet balanced and structured. The contrast of the textured plants, the sculptural forms of the Taxus and Ligustrum, and the bold, tropical palms creates a garden that feels dynamic, yet calm and cohesive.

By removing the overgrown conifers, carefully selecting plants for colour and variety, and adding layers of texture and structure, we’ve created a front garden that is no longer a barren space but a lush, welcoming oasis. It perfectly balances the natural, relaxed aesthetic our clients wanted with the structured elegance that gives the garden definition. Now, their front garden is the perfect introduction to their home—vibrant, beautiful, and filled with life.

Planting in November means that while our efforts won’t come to full fruition until the following spring and summer, we are laying the groundwork for a vibrant garden to come. The beds have been carefully covered with a thick layer of mulch, protecting the plants through the cold winter months and helping to insulate the soil from frost. Though we won’t see the full bloom of our hard work until next year, there’s a quiet excitement in knowing that the garden is silently preparing itself to burst forth with colour and life when the weather warms, and we can’t wait to see it gradually bloom during our regular visits to maintain it. It’s a season of patience and anticipation, and we can’t wait to share this garden with you next year so you can witness everything thriving and blooming in all its glory.
